Life's not perfect and happy
Love cannot be tamed
It's messy, confusing, and humbling;
no sense of it can be made.
But not life, nor love, nor joy
can be found if a sensible path you seek.
So you wanna find love like the movies?
Well, son, you'll be let down.
It's said that 'love endures all things'
That's just not true of all fates you'll find.
Better you learn this truth straight out:
The fight you fight for those you love is the hardest fight of your life.
Do not despair so soon;
hope yet lies within.
Happiness can still be found
if you seek but a simple exchange.
I tell you all this not to cause you despair
but to celebrate love that once was...as I knew it.

Expression

There it is again-
Looming, unavoidable
I see it, I hear it, I do not understand it
I dismiss it for what it is
There is nothing else to do
There it is again-
Heavy in the air
I sense it, I know, I do not understand it
I retreat within my mind
There is nothing else to do
There it is again-
Louder, more intense
I feel it, I am it, I do not understand it
I ignore its pleading call
There is nothing else to do
There it is again-
It’s been here all along
I change it, I shape it, I do not understand it
I embrace my twisted fate
There is nothing else to do
There it is again-
Now it takes control
I hate it, I fight it, I do not understand it
I resist my chosen path
There is nothing else to do
Here it is again…
I do not understand it

I took a walk today
A million thoughts rushed through my mind
Sometimes life can get the better of us
Take away from things we’d soon forget
The irony to me, though,
Is that’s not living true at all.
That which we most ignore
That which we pass by every day
Can sometimes be the piece you thought you needed
To make you feel complete in your own eyes
If you want to be happy
Take stock of that which you never do
Those things of most importance,
The simple beauty of a life,
Are sometimes lost about the daily struggles
We find within ourselves most every day
Life is not hard to figure
All that you need is here and now
And all those precious moments
That you recall when I’m by your side
See someday soon you’ll know what’s most important
Like walking hand in hand in the pouring rain

Somedays
03:09
|
|||
The answer to life must be somewhere out there;
Where do I go from here?
I thought I knew but please remind me
This bottle is only so deep
Why is it that when you’re sure of one thing
Another comes along to disprove it?
But I am fine I tell myself,
The Creek cannot disagree
I am strong and I have faith;
What more can you ask of me?
At the end of the day, this man’s done his best
And my name I can leave in good rest
These shoulders have borne much more than their share
Yet slender they are wont to quit
Yet still I trudge on, feigning that none
Could rattle the prodigal son
The truth of it is, somedays I’m remiss
For taking on everyone’s burdens but one
But I am fine I tell myself,
The Creek cannot disagree
I am strong and I have faith;
What more can you ask of me?
At the end of the day, this man’s done his best
And my name I can leave in good rest

You are your hero,
Your action,
Your protagonist,
You are your home
Your life playing out
Through pages unbound
Every action, a flick of the pen.
Every choice, a turn of the page.
The world around you,
Vaguely defined,
All else but a scene in your story
All else but a face in the crowd.
You’ll soon be gone this way
In others’ own tales
You’ll play a supporting role
You’ll be a nameless face
You are your hero,
Your action,
Your protagonist,
You are your own.

Looking Back
03:56
|
|||
Well looking back at how things were
I don’t miss you but I need you to know
With all that’s changed from then to now,
For me those days remain the same.
You love what you have and you love while it lasts
And the rest you just leave for new loves to surpass
Over morning tea it comes back to me:
That Utah scene you hate me to tell
Well you cursed the stars, you looked quite the mess
And that tent I don’t know how it was standing
But you looked so proud as you turned to me then
And I swear that I loved you all over again.
Well those North woods had us and we had them
We were cold and soaked and lost like hell
I never was that good with directions
But it always seemed to work out just as well
‘Cause that lightning storm off the edge of the bay
Was a sight we could only have seen that way
So looking back at how things were
I keep thinking about how things will become
With all that could change by tomorrow
I’m just thankful for the time we could share.
Though people may come and people may go,
You can’t put a tag on memories, you know.

Forgotten Lung
05:44
|
|||
I was only but a lad
When that muddy hymn made glad
This heart and gently coaxed me for to hear
That little tune still floats along
Over the old, forgotten lung
Some time ago when youth breathed through it clear
Oh, but now it’s just a testament
To that time and what’s left of it
It can still be heard if you listen for it, dear.
Once I held a stranger for so long I thought I knew her
But now I am my stranger,
Though the dreams of future pain her
As they often do to those who pass it by
The earth has sounded different now,
To her, to me, and still I vow
To wander through these pines until they know
Familiar notes around me rise,
Howled to the sultry skies,
Awakening some tragic truth below
Now that swelling symphony
Breaks forth for me in mystery
Covering the earth in fiery rain
Breathing free and clear again,
It comes resounding through the glen
A tune that memory never could retain
But time has made it new once more,
What never would have been for sure
Is that which we can make our truest aim
Once I held a stranger for so long I thought I knew her
But now I am my stranger,
Though the dreams of future pain her
As they often do to those who pass it by

Come Home
06:01
|
|||
Take me
Hold me as I drift away
I want to see my body
as it should be
Show me
Call me as only you can
Part of me you can take-
what's left you but reclaim
Lead me
Guide this pen I hold
It was through you
that I once spoke
Find me
Turn within as I call out
and we both strain
with muted mouth:
Come home

Earth Lover
05:40
|
|||
Our hearts are fragile
Our minds, weak.
Love, like air,
We desperately cling to
Forgetting the price one thing may have
When you let it consume you
These wounds may leave
No visible scars
It carves you, forms you,
With its callous touch.
Let no one tell you otherwise, son:
Naught else can maim as much.
Earth Lover, stand strong, O son of mine
There is no shame in lying down
For down, you know, you are not bound
Earth Mother, yet one is in need of you,
What faith you can, grant him anew
For love, you know, is the best thing we do.
